YA Collection
Questions and Answers |
How
does the library define a Young Adult, for the purposes of a young adult
collection?
The Young Adult (or
YA) collection is a collection of books that are focused on the reading
and interest levels of the library’s young adult patrons. Young adult
readers can fall in any age bracket, but generally speaking, 12-18 is the
accepted standard.
How are books for the
collection chosen?
All the books in the library’s collection are chosen
by Reference Librarians. Librarians use professional selection tools such
as journals and book reviews. They also utilize patron requests when
considering materials for purchase. Book reviews and patron requests are
weighed in light of a variety of considerations including: value of the
book to the community, literary merit, and popularity.
Can I suggest books
for purchase?
Yes! You are always
welcome to request that the library purchase a book. The best place to do
this would be at the Reference Desk. Here you may either let the
Librarians know verbally, or fill out a “Patron Purchase Suggestion” form
to turn in to the Librarian. After a request has been submitted, the
Librarian who orders books in that department will then decide whether the
book will be ordered. |
