AMERICA'S READING PROBLEM
One fifth of the adult population of the U.S. cannot read well enough to cope successfully as workers, parents and citizens. More than 200,000 adults in Orange County are functionally illiterate.
Why do so many people have inadequate literacy skills? Many people did not receive the individual help they needed in school.
Some left school to earn a living. Others have come to America from foreign lands. Whatever its cause, illiteracy affects everyone.
Free, confidential, individualized instruction by well-trained volunteers is an effective means of teaching adult nonreaders. Anyone who can speak, read and write English well can be a tutor. The members of Literacy Volunteers
- HBPL invite you to join us in helping people
improve their lives.
